On Friday the University of Tennessee hired Butch Jones to take over their football program after firing Derek Dooley nearly three weeks ago. After rumors of John Gruden, Mike Gundy and Charlie Strong, the Vols ended up with the 2011 Big East Coach of the Year. Shortly after several outlets confirmed the report Friday morning, Vol fans did what Vol fans do best as of late.
Flip out.
Sports talk radio was flooded with calls from some of the most idiotic fans that Southern Appalachia has to offer. Facebook and Twitter exploded with post from some of the finest arm chair Athletic Directors in the country. Messages boards went into full fledge meltdown mode.
This has been an almost daily occurrence for the past five seasons on Rocky Top. Vol fans are angry. They're angry because they've had four losing seasons in five years. They're angry because they've had five head coaches in five seasons. (Including Jim Chaney). They're angry that they haven't seen a bowl game in two years and haven't won one since Bush was in office. "This is Tennessee", they say.
They're right. This is Tennessee.
Gone are the days when Phil Fulmer roamed the sidelines of Shields Watkins Field. Gone are the days when the real UT was playing for a spot in the SEC championship game every year. No longer is there 102,000 plus packed into Neyland Stadium for every home game.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
No longer are they beating, or even competing with Bama, Florida, and Georgia. They have been embarrassed by Mississippi St, ran out of Nashville by in state Vanderbilt and lost to Kentucky for the first time in 26 years.
They're down. And they've been down so long that being down is all they know.
They're so used to being down that all they knew how to do when AD Dave Hart made the decision to hire the 2011 Big East coach of the year, who has won four conference championships in six seasons and has a record of 52-27, was act like a four year old who didn't get what they wanted for Christmas. They didn't take time to consider the success he has had everywhere he has been. They didn't want to listen to some of the most respected people in the sports world tell them that Butch Jones was well respected among the coaching circles and praised Dave Hart for hiring him to turn the program around.
They forgot that they love the University of Tennessee because of what it is. They love it because of the Orange and White. They love it for the Vol Navy, Vol Walk and Neyland Stadium on fall Saturdays. They sing Rocky Top to the top of their lungs while they salute the Pride of The Southland Band. That's Tennessee football. The wins brought them tradition, and that tradition isn't going any where.
Is Butch Jones John Gruden? No.
But his credentials suggest that he could have any number of jobs, and he choose, no he begged for this one. In four days on the job he has embraced everything that Derek Dooley didn't in three years. He's not intimated by Saban, Miles or Richt and he doesn't care that he wasn't UT's first pick.
Butch Jones has won everywhere he has every been, and Tennessee needs a winner right now.
Vol fans We may not have the mansion on the hill, but in order to keep up with the Joneses, we need Butch Jones.

Fandom In The SEC
As #2 Alabama gets set to take on #3 Georgia this afternoon in Atlanta for the SEC Championship most SEC fans focus is on that matchup because the winner will earn a trip to Miami to play top ranked Notre Dame for the BCS National Championship. And for Tide and Dawgs fans it's the biggest game of the year.
Alabama is looking to get back to the title game after winning it last season, and Georgia is looking to play in the national title game for the first time in decades.
Both have a tough loss on their résumé and both should feel fortunate that winning this game affords them the luxury of getting the chance at a BCS title shot.
If your an Alabama or Georgia fan, you were elated when Kansas St. decided not to play defense at all against Baylor and Oregon's high powered offense was shut down by Stanford.
But if your not, and your school resides in the SEC, you were, or should have been, pissed.
Why?
For the first time in seven years we were going to get a BCS champion that wasn't in the South Eastern Conference. One of these two teams could have put an end to Nick Saban's back to back title run. One of these two teams could have, and should have, left Alabama and Georgia fans whining about how a one loss SEC team should be playing in the title game over an undefeated "weaker conference" champion.
But these two teams decided that wasn't going to happen. They decided to waste a golden opportunity, a possible once in a lifetime chance to win a national championship. Flat out blew the chance to put SEC dominance on notice.
I could go on and on and on. But I won't.
And before you mistaken me for a west coast guy or an SEC hater, you should know this: My team plays in the SEC.
And I am not just your average fan. My fandom goes well beyond most outside of the SEC don't understand. To us, it's the most important, unimportant thing in this world.
Which brings me to my point.
How the hell does any fan that supports an SEC team, support other SEC teams?
I've have wondered this for years. When I ask, I get the common fans responses.
"I pull for the SEC."
"If my team ain't in it I wanna see an SEC team win it."
"It makes the conference look strong."
"It's more money for the conference".
It's ludicrous, idiotic, and downright stupid for any fan who's team plays in the South Eastern Conference to want to see another South Eastern Conference team succeed. If your one of these fans, with all due respect (And I'm saying with all do respect) your not really a "fan."
I mean sure, you wear you team colors, you watch the game on TV, and you know what you know about your team because of the last local newspaper article but that just makes you a normal fan. And normal is okay. If your teams plays in any other conference in America other than the SEC.
In the SEC we real fans eat, breath and sleep for our teams. We live for our teams 24/7-365. We pack parking lots hours before games. We know who the third string QB is and where he played high school ball. We spend countless hours logged on to sites that we pay for just so we can get the latest info on our teams or the 17 and 18 year old kids that they are recruiting.
We do not under any circumstances want to see our rivals succeed. Ever.
It hurts our program more than the average fan can understand. It's hard enough to recruit high school stars, even harder when your rivals are successful, and damn near impossible when their winning National Championships.
The conference is making hundreds of millions in TV contracts alone. They don't need the money.
And nothing bothers me more than to hear a Tennessee fan say they hope one of these teams playing tonight win the BCS title because there in the SEC.
That's exactly why you don't want them to win.

Give Thanks
Since tomorrow is Thanksgiving I thought I would take a few minutes to give thanks for some recent events in the sports world.
First off, there is twelve straight hours of football tomorrow.
God bless the Pilgrims.
Lets give thanks to Kansas St and Oregon for ensuring us of another SEC national title this year. Alabama doesn't blow second chances and according to Vegas the Tide would be a 14 point favorite over Notre Dame. That's assuming the Irish win on Saturday. A loss to USC would most likely mean two SEC teams playing in Miami.
As a fan of a team that plays in the SEC that's just what I wanna see. My team struggle while my rivals win titles. That's what troubles me about most "SEC" fans. If their team can't win it all they wanna see another conference foe on top.
Why? I have no idea. Other than stupidity I can't figure out why a fan would want another team in the conference to have an advantage in recruiting.
Guess what, the conference may look good with all these championships, but you don't.
Since we mentioned Oregon, give thanks to the Ducks cheerleaders.
We should definitely give thanks to NHL commissioner Gary Betman. The lockout is in full swing and after 10 straight days of negotiating he decided the best course of action would be too....take a vacation. That's right. The most incompetent commissioner in all of major sports (Rodger Goodell is a close second) thought it would be best to take a break. Its November, and we have no hockey Gary. You need to spend Thanksgiving with the players union, not in the Virgin Islands.
Give thanks to George St Pierre for his impressive return to the octagon last Saturday. Because of his win we may finally see a "super fight" with Anderson Silva.
Give thanks to Anderson Silva for being the baddest man on the planet.
And lastly let's give a special thanks to the best news of the year other than Tennessee's dismissal of Derek Dooley.
NASCAR.
It appears they crowned their champion this past Sunday and that means that activity is finally over. Who won? I have no idea. But I guarantee you it was a very un athletic guy, with a smoking hot wife ( which I will never understand) that spent half an hour thanking his sponsors and talking about how his - insert number here- car was fast all year long.
While I'm saying thanks tomorrow I'm gonna wish that NASCAR would hire Gary Betman to run things. The only thing better than their season being over would be a lockout.
So Happy Thanksgiving.

Election Day
Head coaches are a lot like presidents right? I mean, they lie publicly, cheat privately, and take large amounts of money from donors to get what they want all the while trying to lead to victory.
So on this Election Day I decided to put together a small list of head coaches who should run for president.
Almost all of them would be a better fit in the White House than the two we have to choose from.
1. Nick Saban- For obvious reasons. First, the United States would dominate. Everything. The economy would turn, wars would last days, and gas would cost about $1.00 a gallon. Would you wanna be the Middle Eastern oil kings after Saban got done with you? No, you wouldn't. Because you would loose. And terrorist would issue apologies.
2. Bill Belichick- Again, domination would play a big part in electing Belichick. Most of the same things you get with Saban you get with Bill, and there wouldn't be any speculation as to who tailored his suits since he dresses like a homeless dude.
3. Chip Kelly- The United States would attack everything they did with speed and precision. Giving his tempo, he could repair the economy, erase the national debt, and fix healthcare in about six months. He would spend the second half of the term thinking about his next term.
4. Bobby Petrino- He might get impeached by year two but I think he would be very Clinton like. Especially with the interns.
5. Brian Kelly- If we don't get him, Ireland will. He would run a tight but steady ship and Catholics everywhere would rejoice. America would be fine, unless we ran into actually competition.
Vice Presidential Candidates:
1. Derek Dooley- Never has made it as the Big Man but has always been good in a supporting role. Looks the part of a politician and would use useless bits of American history in his speeches.
2. Bill Snyder- He would bring respect and dignity to the White House. Pair him with the right President and our government would run flawlessly.
3. Mike Leech- Not the best guy to lead, but would be a hell of a right hand man. Could put together an explosive economic game plan, and press conferences and debates would be epic.
Left Of the Ballot:
Steve Spurrier- To brash to lead the nation and The Ole Ball Coach doesn't play second fiddle to anybody. Couldn't you see Spurrier interrupting the Speaker of the House with that sarcastic who do you think you are tone?
Jimmy Johnson- Although he's a proven winner, you can't have a leader with erectile dysfunction. At least not publicly known. Would he run Cialis commercials in between campaign adds?
Bill Cower- Yes he's a winner, but he also looks like he hates everyone. All the time. And I think he actually does. He may be the type of guy to bomb the entire world just because he's having a bad day.
Of course these are just a few candidates that could help our country.
And who knows what will happen tonight.

Pay For Play
You have all seen it by now. Even if you weren't watching South Carolina beating Tennessee in the second quarter of Saturdays game, you have no doubt viewed a video on YouTube or seen a picture posted on twitter of the gruesome injury suffered by Gamecock RB and Hiesman Trophy candidate Marcus Lattimore. It was one of the worst looking injuries ever seen in football. There's no disputing that.
But what is being disputed by the NCAA is whether or not college athletes should be paid to play sports.
The NCAA may be the most corrupt organization in America. They make hundreds of millions of dollars per year without any oversight, any restrictions, or any regard for the athletes in which they control. They make there own rules all the while choosing which rules to enforce and how to enforce them. And they do this with one thing in mind. Their well being and their well being only.
Even New Jersey Mob bosses think the NCAA is a scam. And they envy it.
What they do to a large part of student athletes is downright disturbing when it comes to their controlling of a players financial present and future. The upper echelon players on Division 1 football rosters generate millions of dollars for the NCAA, their Universities, and the towns they play in.
What they get in return is pennies on the dollar. Literally.
And before you start with the "their getting a free education" argument, let me stop you right there because this is an idiotic argument.
Why?
Look at Marcus Lattimore. Since bursting onto the scene in 2010 as a true freshman he has wowed the nation with his physically running style, quick cutting ability, and break away speed rarely seen in power back. After a phenomenal freshman campaign he was already on NFL radars. Had he been eligible to enter the NFL Draft after the 2010 season, he would have been a first round draft pick. An instant millionaire. But he wasn't. Because the NCAA wants to keep its prized athletes as long as possible. Why should someone else make the millions off of them when they can do it at no cost to them.
Lattimore started 2011 the same way he ended 2010. Then an injury to the ligaments in his left knee ended his season and raised doubts about his NFL future.
But Lattimore underwent multiple surgeries and extensive rehab to be ready to return to the field at the start of this 2012 season. He not only returned, he picked up right where he had left off in 2011 as the best running back in the country. He had answered the questions of critics who were skeptical on how he would look after the injury. And up until the second quarter of Saturdays game, the injury that occurred a year ago was an after thought.
And then it happened. As Lattimore planted his leg into the ground to take on a couple of Tennessee defenders, a helmet landed directly on the knee. What happened next had people nauseous. Lattimore flew through the air, his right leg clearly mangled, and then landed on the field grabbing at his right knee, which was now located on the side of his leg. One Volunteer defender close to the play when it happened said post game that he had to turn away to keep from vomiting. It is easily one of the worst football injuries ever witnessed on TV. The diagnoses is complete destruction of his right knee.
Just like that.
Marcus Lattimore's future as an NFL football player and his ability to secure himself and his family financially is in serious doubt.
But hey, he'll have that degree from the University of South Carolina to fall back on, right? This is where this argument by the NCAA is ridiculous.

He has helped transform the Gamecocks into a national power, bringing in millions of dollars to the University and the NCAA. He has also had an economical impact on the state. Because of Lattimore, Columbia, South Carolina restaurants, hotels, and shopping malls have raked in extra cash.
Thousands of people showed up on campus yesterday to show support for their fallen star. Professional athletes, actors, musicians, and politicians took to twitter to send out encouraging messages. The Governor of the state of South Carolina (who is a Clemson alum) declared yesterday Marcus Lattimore day.
And the reward that the NCAA sees fit to bestow on him for the accolades, accomplishments, and untold millions he has generated. Around $38,800 dollars. And not in a cash payment. In free tuition. At a value of about $9,200 per year.
And the kid can't so much as accept a $5 breakfast from a fan at Denny's without violating the NCAA's ludicrous rules.
These same people that are at the forefront of the "free tuition" argument are probably the same ones who boycott Nike because they pay Chinese workers about $2 a day to make $200 shoes.
And before you slam me for comparing the NCAA to a million dollar corporation who takes advantage of unfair labor wages, do the math.
Average ticket price to see Lattimore play is $64. Multiply that by 144 tickets and you have around $9,200.
Average attendance for a game at Williams-Brice Stadium: 80,000.
I'm not trying to take away the value of an education. Its important, but it's not priceless.
If Lattimore never plays football again and relies on a college degree and makes an average salary of $60,000 per year, it would take him around 500 years to make what he would have made with his first NFL contract.
So the next time you try and make your "free education" argument, think about Marcus Lattimore and do the math first.

And the reward that the NCAA sees fit to bestow on him for the accolades, accomplishments, and untold millions he has generated. Around $38,800 dollars. And not in a cash payment. In free tuition. At a value of about $9,200 per year.
And the kid can't so much as accept a $5 breakfast from a fan at Denny's without violating the NCAA's ludicrous rules.
These same people that are at the forefront of the "free tuition" argument are probably the same ones who boycott Nike because they pay Chinese workers about $2 a day to make $200 shoes.
And before you slam me for comparing the NCAA to a million dollar corporation who takes advantage of unfair labor wages, do the math.
Average ticket price to see Lattimore play is $64. Multiply that by 144 tickets and you have around $9,200.
Average attendance for a game at Williams-Brice Stadium: 80,000.
I'm not trying to take away the value of an education. Its important, but it's not priceless.
If Lattimore never plays football again and relies on a college degree and makes an average salary of $60,000 per year, it would take him around 500 years to make what he would have made with his first NFL contract.
So the next time you try and make your "free education" argument, think about Marcus Lattimore and do the math first.
You'll probably think twice about sounding so stupid.

CFB: Dominance?
All it takes is a look at the latest BCS standings to see that even though nine weeks have passed in a college football season that has been full of surprise and change, there is one thing that hasn't changed:
The SEC is good.
How good? SEC teams occupy the #1, #5,#6, #7 and #8 spots in the standings. That's more than 1/3 of the conference ranked in the top eight in the country.
Four out of the five rank in the top 10 of at least one of every major statistical category, three in total defense alone. And if that isn't enough, Las Vegas claims that #1 Alabama from the SEC would be a double digit favorite against #2 Kansas St. on a neutral field. In fact, according to Vegas #5 LSU and #6 Georgia would be favored over Kansas and #3 Notre Dame. And Vegas tends to know what there doing. There one if the few that wins more than Nick Saban.
But before we go ahead and crown the SEC with a seventh straight BCS title, lets not overlook a couple of possibilities that could leave the SEC on the outside looking in.
Alabama plays LSU on Saturday in what is all of the sudden a huge game again, especially for the Tigers. After losing to Florida early in the year most had ridden off Les Miles's team. But Saturday is a chance to beat the number one team in the country and put themselves back in the national title picture. It would also make every SEC title contender have 1 loss.
If K State, Notre Dame and Oregon win out then the SEC would be locked out of the championship game.
And before K State fans start to celebrate they had better worry about the two other unbeaten teams. First they have to take care of business but they also will need some help. Notre Dame has to lose a game in order for K State to get in. No way you could argue that the schedule the Irish will have played is not far better than the Wildcats. Hate Notre Dame all you want, but don't disregard common logic. Or common sense.
And although I think Oregon is the second best team in the country they may need more help than K State. The Ducks are about to enter the tough part of there schedule but the "quality wins" won't have as much quality as they thought. They haven't played a top 10 opponent all season and they may only play two ranked in the top 25. If they run the table they will get an extra game that the Irish won't with the PAC 12 title game, but will that be enough? I say no, but will see.
I firmly believe Oregon would give Alabama the best test. Vegas agrees putting the Ducks as only a six point underdog against the Tide. To put that into perspective LSU is getting 11 in Baton Rouge.
There is a lot of football left to be played but this Saturday could really clear some things up.

Another Shot?
It's obvious at this point that Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee are all going to be coach shopping at seasons end.
It's also obvious that Bobby Petrino is going to get another shot, and it won't be a bad job no matter where he ends up.There all in the SEC. All are gonna pay pretty well. For Petrino, it's a win win.
I mean lets be honest, things looked pretty bleak for the guy not that long ago. The motor cycle accident, the affair, the firing. Most people would have probably climbed back on the bike and ran off the nearest bridge. But not Petrino. And you know why? Because he's a hell of a football coach. That's why.
You see, in the world of college football there is always a place at the table for a good coach. And Petrino knows this. Despite the mistakes that he made, his services are gonna be in high demand in about two months.
And speaking of the mistakes, lets not try and sound like a couple of baptist ministers here. It's not like he committed some violent crime of epic proportions. In fact, he didn't commit a crime at all. Lets face it, if every man lost his job because he had an affair with an above average looking women, the unemployment rate would be ten times what it is right now. And before you people start with the whole " I wouldn't have Petrino if he was the last coach on earth" talk, stop and think about one thing.... winning. That's what you want right? Those four teams wanna win, and three of them wanna win now. And ironically the one team who just wants to be a 7-8 win team every year (Kentucky) may be the best fit for Petrino.
If Petrino can win and win big at Louisville, than he can surpass the Wildcats expectations. He still has recruiting connections in the state and surrounding areas. He would instantly get more out of the players they have, and ticket sales would increase in a hurry. Whoever lands Petrino will have to deal with some media backlash and negative publicity for a short time. UK hired John Calipari so, they shouldn't have a problem with any of Petrino's baggage.
The top job will be at Tennessee. Say what you will, The Vols haven't been successful as of late, but if they had been they wouldn't need a new coach. UT is still a top 15 coaching job. A passionate fan base, one of the largest stadiums in the country, and facilities that are second to none. Add in the largest recruiting budget in the nation and the fact that this programs wants to win more than any of the others and you should be able to see why it will be the best job available. I'm not saying Petrino ends up in Knoxville, he wouldn't be my first call, but he would be pretty damn close to the top of the list. With Petrino, the Vol faithful would get more than moral victories.
And I know Auburn fans are arguing that there the better job. First off, it's not like its a great argument. Arguing over which program has the better job opening is about as dumb as arguing over who's team is better. You both suck. The Tigers have won a national title lately and Chizik has been able to recruit at a pretty high level but let's be honest, that was all luck. Every bit of success that Chizik has had can be attributed to pure, old fashioned luck. Now its not that Pertrino is a bad fit here. He showed he could compete in the SEC west at Arkansas and he would reenergize the rivalry with Alabama. This actually could be the most likely destination. Auburn could care less about his reputation (or theres) and it's not like they have a problem paying coaches a big chunk of money (or players).

There is no other conference in college football where the expectations are higher than in the South Eastern Conference. Head coaches of these University's are ask to reach or maintain a high standard, much like the CEO's of some of the nations largest companies. For these schools, it's a business, a very big, very profitable business. And just like those CEO's that are shown the door if sales are down or the product isn't changing with the times or its competitors, these coaches are ran out of town faster than an Oregon speed sweep. As loses mount, fans become disgruntled, stadiums become less full and boosters start holding checks. Athletic directors then have decisions to make. For every lost game, it's also lost revenue. That's the reality of this power conference. Players, fans, and boosters expect perfection. The universities have no choice but to expect the same.
But it's also about tradition, pride and rivalries. It's about a long history of winning football programs and coaching legends. It's about packed stadiums on Fall Saturdays with overflowing tailgaters on campus parking lots and playing on a national stage every week.
And all of that is about winning.
See the SEC has built the Mecca of college football conferences because of winning. Without the wins, you don't have packed stadiums. Fan bases don't expect championships. Tradition is not as storied and you play games on Thursday night or Saturday morning.
Ask the Big Ten, they know better than anyone.
And where not talking about the occasional 10 win season. In the SEC, every school, every game, every year counts. Every win, every loss. Every mistake a head coach makes burns into the minds of fans, media and university brass.
With the exception of Vanderbilt and Kentucky, every other team in the conference expects a championship in the near future. Maybe not this year or next, but by year three if your not winning in the SEC your looking for another job. And things are changing in Nashville and Lexington. Vandy not only hired a guy to build their program into a contender, but payed a lot of money to keep him and UK will fire one of their own at seasons end even tough he has taken the team to two bowl games and beat rival Tennessee for the first time in 26 years.
And speaking of Tennessee, they will no doubt replace head coach Derek Dooley at the end if the season after 18 loses and counting in two and half seasons. The Vols have one of the most storied programs in the SEC but haven't won the conference title since 1998 when Phil Fulmer lead them to a national championship. Fourteen years and three coaches later their still trying to reach that goal. By January they'll have a new coach to resume that goal.
And it all comes back to winning.
Gene Chizick won a national title at Auburn two years ago and will be unemployed by Christmas. It's a "what have you done for me lately" world in this conference, and lately means last Saturday.
Win and your a legend. Nick Saban already has a statue at Bryant Denney Stadium right next to Bear Bryant, and he still has 20 years to win titles their. (God forbid).
Lose and your a joke.
Just ask anyone who's coached in the SEC how it is. They will tell you it's win or else. They know this because 98% of them didn't leave on their terms.
Give it about two months, and you can add four more coaches to that list.

CFB: 3 Teams at #2
What we found out yesterday was that #1 Alabama is, well, still #1. Not that they were ever in any danger against a Tennessee team that is in shambles but they continued to do what they've done all year.
And that is dominate.
So while the Tide have clearly established themselves as the best team in the country, there are three teams who you could argue are the second best team in the land.
Florida - The Gators have to be the biggest surprise this year. The tougher the opponent, the better they play. Will Muschamp has this team believing they can beat anybody in the country, and he may be right. They have played the toughest schedule of any of the top five teams in the BCS and the road won't get much easier. A huge showdown with Georgia on Saturday means a win most likely locks up the SEC's eastern division. This coming off the heels of a flawless performance against another top ten team yesterday in which they made the Ole' Ball Coach look like an old ball coach while picking apart South Carolina. The Gators may be the only team in college football who could match the Crimson Tides physicality. And they should get there chance in Atlanta.
Oregon- Offensive perfection, solid defense and speed everywhere. The Ducks have more speed then the Jamaican Olympic relay team and Chip Kelly knows how to use it. They are also extremely well coached and don't beat themselves with turnovers. They wear teams down with that fast paced, up tempo offense and they can explode with series after series of big plays from anywhere on the field. It's no doubt they can put up points against any defense in the country. There's the argument of "they don't play in the SEC" but trust me, if they did, they would be fine. With that much talent and speed they could play in the NFC North and still be fine.
Kansas St.- Outside of Florida, Bill Snyder's Wildcats are the biggest surprise in football. And many are making valid points that K State is the bigger surprise. I'm not gonna go that route but I will say I understand the argument. Collin Klein is one of the best players in the country and has carried this team right into the thick of the national title race. Now they definitely haven't played the schedule of Florida, but they have won every game they've played in and housed West Virginia yesterday to get to 7-0. This team will go as far as Klein will carry them. I believe they'll need some help to get into the BCS title game. The winner of the SEC championship game (should be Alabama/Florida) is in, which means they most likely need an Oregon loss. But we have definitely learned that this team is legit.

CFB: 5 Still Alive
Six games into the college football season and the first BCS rankings are out. One through five is no big surprise, though one could argue two and three should be flip flopped. Those top 5 are unbeaten and in the thick of a national title race.
Technically there are still a total of 12 teams that could end up in Miami, but lets be realistic. #12 Mississippi St. is the worst unbeaten team in the country and will lose at least two games by seasons end. Georgia, USC, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and LSU all have a loss. They need to run the table, win their conference championship game and get a some help.
Oregon St. is undefeated but let's be honest, the Beavers glory run ain't gonna last much last much longer.
So here's what you have left. Two of these teams should end up in Miami.

Kentucky- A tough loss to Western Kentucky dampened the Wildcats hopes. And if that's not enough, 10 other losses will be.
Heisman watch:
Collin Klein QB, KSU- If he keeps winning he'll join the elusive club.
Braxton Miller, QB OSU- I personally don't think a player on a non bowl eligible team should get an invite to New York but there's no denying that he's one of the best in the country.
Jeff Driskel QB, UF- Cant keep looking past the fact that the kid is really really good. May be more athletic than Tebow and he's just getting started.
Right there:
Geno Smith QB, WVU- Didn't have a great game in the loss to Texas Tech but still has play station like numbers. He has time to get back to the front.
Manti T'eo LB, ND- It's unlikely that a defensive player gets the award but this kid is a beast. Best defensive player in the country.
Kiehl Frazier QB, AU- If the 1-4 record as a starter don't close the door, the two touchdowns and seven interceptions may be to much to overcome. Especially when your benched

Florida St.- A terrible loss crushed their hopes.
West Virginia- ( See Florida St. )
Kentucky- A tough loss to Western Kentucky dampened the Wildcats hopes. And if that's not enough, 10 other losses will be.
Heisman watch:
Collin Klein QB, KSU- If he keeps winning he'll join the elusive club.
Braxton Miller, QB OSU- I personally don't think a player on a non bowl eligible team should get an invite to New York but there's no denying that he's one of the best in the country.
Jeff Driskel QB, UF- Cant keep looking past the fact that the kid is really really good. May be more athletic than Tebow and he's just getting started.
Right there:
Geno Smith QB, WVU- Didn't have a great game in the loss to Texas Tech but still has play station like numbers. He has time to get back to the front.
Manti T'eo LB, ND- It's unlikely that a defensive player gets the award but this kid is a beast. Best defensive player in the country.
Kiehl Frazier QB, AU- If the 1-4 record as a starter don't close the door, the two touchdowns and seven interceptions may be to much to overcome. Especially when your benched

How Bad Is It: Tennessee Edition
Things on Rocky Top went from not very good to slightly beyond bad on Saturday night. What started off as a promising season with some very attainable expectations has turned into another bad dream for the Big Orange faithful. Things aren't in full fledged melt down mode yet, but #1 Alabama comes into Neyland Stadium this Saturday night and if the expected happens (UT opens up as 19 point underdog) the Volunteer fan base will go all out Chernobyl.
Some are already there. All you have to do is log on to any one of the numerous message boards and you can see that Vol Nation is hanging on by a thread. And if (when) that thread breaks Saturday night it will be the start of some interesting (and some completely ridiculous) discussions for the rest of the season.
There are basically two arguments being made right now. One is Derek Dooley has to go.
He's 0 and way to many against ranked opponents. He's coming off a 5 win season. He lost to Kentucky. His only SEC wins are against bottom tier programs. Some just feel that Dooley can't win at Tennessee. And that some is turning into a lot in hurry.
The other group says give Dooley some more time.
He walked into a disaster. He inherited a roster with below average SEC talent. He has had to play a ton of inexperienced young players. He's recruiting well.
Both groups make some valid points. But it's all in how you look at it. It's obvious Tennessee is not what it once was.
The question Vol fans have to ask is what is realistic expectations?
Not that long ago Tennessee's expectations were very defined. Beat your rivals (Bama, UF, UGa) win the East, play in Atlanta. Recruit. Repeat.
Beating teams like South Carolina, Miss. St and Kentucky were givens on the Vols worst days. But to set expectations now, fans have to acknowledge the difference between then and now.
Nick Saban has built a program at Alabama that John L Smith would have a hard time bringing down.
Les Miles is raking in talent at LSU at a rate not seen since Saban was there.
Muschamp is recruiting elite talent and showing he can coach it to.
The Ole Ball Coach has the Gamecocks rolling.
Georgia is solid as usual.
Throw in the success of Miss St. And Texas AM and this ain't your dads SEC. The days of UT/UF deciding who plays Alabama in Atlanta is over. If Tennessee's expectations are still the same, then some big decisions have to be made at seasons end.

Some fans think the solution is as simple as loading up a Brinks truck full of cash and dumping it in a top tier coaches front yard. And maybe it is. Most of the time in the coaching world you get what you pay for. You can't have a $5 coach and expect 5 million dollar results. Elite coaches, much like elite talent, require a certain dollar figure for there services. Tennessee should be able to entice an elite coach. Their a storied program with one of the biggest stadiums in America and facilities that are second to none. They make up for their lack of instate talent with the largest recruiting budget in the nation enabling them to go far and wide to land prospects. They play in the best conference in the country and when winning, have a fan base that will treat you like a god.
But they would have to shell out some cash. Lots of it.
Or do you stay the course with Dooley and "the relentless pursuit for
continuos improvement"? Are you okay with an 8 win ceiling? Can you accept not being a contender on any meaningful level in the college football world. Can you live with being the sixth, seventh, even eighth best team in your conference?

Could the Titans win the BCS National Title?
What? It's a legit question. And I'm a Titans fan. But take a serious look at it. They can't complete in the NFL right now so one can only speculate on how things would play out if they were playing against a more equal opponent.
There a five standout BCS title contenders so let's match the Titans up with each one and pick a winner.
1. Alabama - The Titans lose this game without question. Better offense, better defense, more talent and Nick Saban would coach circles around Mike Munchak. The Titans should petition the league to allow them to draft TJ Yeldon now.
2. Oregon - The Titans are on pace to give up more points than any team in NFL history so mark this one down in the loss column for Tennessee. They have given up 30 or more in every game this year. The Ducks would put up 30 by half time and have a new uniform to do it in.
3. South Carolina - Jadeveon Clowney will be the first pick in next years draft but if this game took place today NFL owners would petition that he never be eligible. He would wreak havoc on Hasslebeck and the Titans O-Line would make him look like Lawrence Taylor on some Lance Armstrong "supplements". So I give it to the Cocks in a close one.
4. Florida - The Gators are young and might make just enough mistakes that the Titans could squeak by. It wouldn't be a barn burner but Hasselbeck would probably throw for a score and CJ would break the 50 yard mark.
5. West Virginia - This would be CJ's coming out party. The Mountaineers defense is slightly worse than the Titans so they should put up 50 points. Problem is, West Virginia's offense is a million times better than the Titans defense. The Mountaineers would put up 60. And 60 beats 50.
So if you kept score, not only would the Titans not win the BCS title, they wouldn't even play in Atlanta for the SEC Championship game.
At least they would get a bowl invite.

Empire State Of Mind
Lets hear it for New York. And Jay Z. After all, if you ain't stealing a verse from Jigga for your blog then you ain't blogging, right? I'll bet Mr. Sean Carter has a few ideas for a couple of his hometown teams but since I couldn't get an interview with the hip hop king, I'll give you my thoughts.
The Yankees are in the post season and have a chance to advance in the AL playoff race while the Jets won't see a postseason game unless they take a team field trip to Yankee Stadium. And team bonding wouldn't be a bad thing for Rex and his boys. But there might just be a way for the two to help each other out. Just hear me out.
A-Rod is a-joke right now for the Brox Bombers hitting somewhere around .001. Ok it's not that bad but he is something like 1 for 200. Ok that's an exaggeration too but you get the point. He's so bad he was benched in the ninth last night, pinch hit for, and his replacement hit not only the game tying homer but also the game winning homer. And Alex is the highest paid player in MLB history. The Yankees have paid him about a trillion dollars.
Mark Sanchez has played like the 5 star recruit he once was. Problem is he's not at USC anymore. He's not on a team with twice as much talent as their opponent. He's actually on a team that probably has less talent than any Trojans team he was a part of. And he has a proven winner sitting behind him that won't see the field because Rex Ryan is an idiot.
So what am I proposing you ask?
Simple.
The Yankees should trade A-Rod to the Jets for Sanchez.
Look at it this way. Sanchez is an athletic guy. You don't get to be an NFL QB by not being a great athlete, even if your a terrible NFL QB(which Sanchez is). You put Sanchez at the plate 15 straight times and I'll bet he puts the bat on the ball and finds a gap at least twice. That's one better than A-Rod.
And Rodriguez to the Jets is a win-win for both teams. The Yankees free up about 10 billion dollars and the Jets get a super star that has already proven that when he gets benched, his replacement comes in and makes miracles happen. His replacement would be Tim Tebow.
And Tim Tebow wakes up in the morning and pisses miracles.
New York needs someone who pisses miracles right now.

Are You Surprised?
There are always surprises in sports. Be it good or bad some teams, coaches, or players don't have the types of seasons people thought they would. In worse case scenarios (See the Boston Red Soxs, Arkansas Razorbacks) it's a combination of bad teams plus terrible coaching plus under performing players that causes a team to fold like an accordion. In best case scenarios (See Baltimore Orioles, Florida Gators) it's a talented team with solid coaching that have their players playing at a high level which leads to over achieving and success.
What determines these outcomes could come from one wrong decision that went unnoticed or a multitude of mistakes that can combine to form a losing atmosphere of almost unimaginable proportions. Is essence, the margin for era is very small but the results can be very big.
The Red Sox's made monumental errors from day one. Fired a two time World Series winning manager, replaced him with a two time loser that had an arrogance and attitude problem, trimmed the talent off their roster and tried to be competitive in the toughest division in baseball with triple a players. Even Des Bryant thinks Boston makes bad decisions.
And there's Arkansas.
Even Boston thinks Arkansas makes bad decisions.
On the flip side of that you have the Orioles who have been terrible for decades but now find themselves not only in the playoffs but have a chance to move on. A great managerial hire and terrific pitching from a young bullpen has people in Maryland talking about more than the Terrapin's uniforms or political debates.
The Gators game into the college football season barley ranked in the top 25 and people already had head coach Will Muschamp on the hot seat after one season in Gainesville. Five weeks in, their the fourth ranked team in the country and in the thick of the national title race. Great coaching combined with great athletes usually equals success. Just ask Nick Saban.
Sometimes as fans we underestimate a lot of the decisions being made. We overlook them in the grand scheme of things.
But it's those decisions that greatly effect the grand scheme of things.
One bad decision and all of the sudden, things aren't so grand.

How Bad Is It: Auburn Edition
Just when we thought there was no way a program could top what Arkansas has been able to accomplish in such a short time, along came Auburn. The dumpster fire that has consumed the Razorbacks football program moved on to new ground on Saturday. It takes a hell of team to lose to Arkansas right now. A team would have to have a putrid QB, a terrible O-line, lack of a running game, pitiful defense, commit a ton of dumb penalties and have the most overrated national title winning coach is history. Add all that up and you have the Auburn Tigers.
Gene Chizik was a below average coach when he was hired from Iowa St. I still remember the "5 and 19" chants by the Auburn faithful as he was stepping off the plane his first day on the job. But Chizik was able to land prized recruit Cam Newton as his QB, and with the guidance of Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzahn the Tigers won the BCS Championship. All was well in Auburn for that one season. Apart from the botched NCAA investigation of improper benefits given to Newton things couldn't have been better. Then Newton decides to take his talents, and a pay cut, to the NFL and Malzahn leaves for a head coaching job. All of the sudden Chizik's coaching abilities, or lack there of, are shining through. You can try to make the argument that you can't blame all this on Chizik but it would be a terrible argument. What have they done post Newton/Malzahn to convince people other wise? They have still put together a couple of good recruiting classes but that just makes your argument look like a Kiehl Frazier pass. Auburn has talent. Next. They don't have a bunch of experienced starters. Neither does Alabama, how's that working out for Saban? Good coaches win a national title and build off it. Good coaches can lose coordinators and assistants and never miss a step. Average coaches can shell out a couple hundred thousand bucks to a couple elite players and coordinators and win a title. When they move on, winning packs it's bags and moves on with them and all that is left is a championship banner and a sorry excuse for a football team.
Auburn fans say that it was worth it. I'm not so sure.

CFB: The Top 5
After five weeks of the college football season, five teams have emerged as legit national title contenders. Some win with offense (West Virgina) some win with defense (Florida) and some win with both (Alabama, South Carolina). One team combines a little bit of all of the above plus enough speed to field an Olympic relay team (Oregon) and perhaps the nations best looking cheerleaders. Here's the fab five.
1. Alabama- Size, speed, execution and depth. The perfect recipe to win a title. The Crimson Tide have them all. On most Saturday's Nick Saban has as much talent standing on the sideline as most teams have on the field. The SEC is the most competitive conference in the country, yet Alabama has found little competition through five games. And judging by the way things are shaking up in the SEC West, there ticket to Atlanta for the SEC championship game is already punched. I would be shocked if they weren't playing in Miami after that.
2. Oregon- Speed, talent, speed, high powered explosive offense, speed, solid defense, speed and extremely attractive cheerleaders can get you by. And for the Ducks they do more than just get by. Their defense is better than most give credit and they do a lot of different things schematically to keep offenses off balance. Offensively the Ducks will spread you out, push the tempo at a border line unfair pace, keep you guessing at all times and then explode with big plays on the ground and threw the air. And there's enough scenery in Eugene to keep everybody tuned in. It was 12:00 a.m. on the east coast in the third quarter of a blowout and yet I couldn't dare close my eyes while the camera crew panned the crowd or the sideline to get a glimpse of the Oregon 10's. Barring a let down game, they could end the SEC title streak.
3. South Carolina- The old ball coach is still got it. He has turned Conner Shaw into a shinning star and has the nations best running back in Marcus Lattimore. Their offense can grind you down and now they can throw it over you too. The defense plays at another level. There is NFL talent all along the defensive front and the secondary doesn't make many mistakes. The 'Cocks have a tough road, but getting through it will leave no doubts about this teams abilities.
4. West Virgina- Offensively there as good as its gets. Geno Smith is the Heisman front runner with his flawless performance through five games and has put up ridiculous numbers that would be difficult to do against air much less opposing defenses. But speaking of defense, the Mountaineer's don't have much of one. Their game plan seems to be to play just enough plays on defense to give the offense a breather, give up a score, watch offense score, repeat. As good as that offense has been, they have to find some defense if they want to win a championship.
5. Florida- Is there a bigger surprise in college football right now? The Gator's have been somewhat quietly putting them selves in contention for the national title race. They have gotten better and better each week on offense and defensively are second to none. Will Muschamp has his boys believing they can beat anybody and he may be right. They have a stretch of tough games up coming but so far the tougher the opponent, the tougher the Gator's play. Their game against South Carolina should determine the SEC East.
Just Missing The Cut
Kansas St.- The Wildcats are right there but they have to keep winning and hope for some help. QB Collin Klein is in the Heisman race and should give K-State a chance in every game.
Notre Dame- Yes the Irish almost crack my top five. Almost. And if it wasn't for those extremely hideous helmets they wore, then who knows. They are playing great defense and the offense has its moments. A tough strech coming up will show what this Irish team is made of. But win or lose, Lou Holts will still say they could win a national title next season as always

They have gotten better and better each week on offense and defensively are second to none. Will Muschamp has his boys believing they can beat anybody and he may be right. They have a stretch of tough games up coming but so far the tougher the opponent, the tougher the Gator's play. Their game against South Carolina should determine the SEC East.
Just Missing The Cut
Kansas St.- The Wildcats are right there but they have to keep winning and hope for some help. QB Collin Klein is in the Heisman race and should give K-State a chance in every game.
Notre Dame- Yes the Irish almost crack my top five. Almost. And if it wasn't for those extremely hideous helmets they wore, then who knows. They are playing great defense and the offense has its moments. A tough strech coming up will show what this Irish team is made of. But win or lose, Lou Holts will still say they could win a national title next season as always

SEC Saturday
Two big match ups in the South Eastern Conference highlight Saturday's slate of games. Yes there are other games going on around the nation but outside of WVU/Texas none have the importance of #4 LSU/#10 Florida or fifth ranked Georgia at #6 South Carolina. Both SEC games probably wont combine to score the number of points that West Virgina and Texas will, but all four teams have something that wins National Championships. Its called defense.
LSU at Florida
Could the Gators be the most underrated team in the top ten? You could make that argument. I'm not going to because of my extreme dislike for the team that hails from Gainesville, but I'm just saying that you could. They barely cracked the preseason top 25, were picked to finish sixth and even seventh in the SEC, and outside of Gainesville expectations weren't too high. With a second year head coach and a young QB all the Gators have done is win. Heading into Saturdays showdown against LSU they have an opportunity to emerge as a favorite to win the SEC East. A win on Saturday puts them as either 1a or 1b in the pecking order in the East depending on the outcome of Georgia/South Carolina. And the upset is not unimaginable. Florida has ran the ball very well this season even against a couple of tough SEC defenses. Driskel is playing solid smart football for a young QB and much like the entire Florida team, the defense has gotten better and better each week. LSU has looked beatable to say the least in their last couple of outings. Their defense should return to form this week after a couple of sloppy performances and give Florida fits. But there offense has been average at best and QB play has been borderline Kentucky like at times. They do have several backs that can carry the football but at some point in Saturdays game, Mettenberger will have to make plays for the Tiger offense if LSU wants to remain unbeaten. The Swamp is a tough place to play and the Gators ain't Towson.

The Gamecocks were trailing 17-7 last Saturday at halftime, and then remembered they were playing Kentucky. A steady dose of Marcus Lattimore in the second half turned the game around and now the 'Cocks are favored heading into Saturdays match up with #5 Georgia. Georgia gave up 44 points at home to Tennessee and turned the ball over five times in a close win. Had it not been for Vol QB Tyler Bray going all Jay Cutler in the last five or so minutes of the game, the Dawgs could be feeling very different right now. Both teams have strengths and weaknesses in almost the same areas. They both play very solid defense, usually, both have stud running backs ( Georgia actually has two ) and both are solid on special teams. The winner is in the drivers seat in the SEC East and stays in the BCS National Title picture.

CFB Week 5: A Look Back
The fifth week of the college football season was as entertaining as anyone could want if your into offensive shootouts as teams were scoring at will and players were putting up play station like numbers. Several games looked like the defenses were playing under Pro Bowl rules which is the equivalent of standing still when the ball is snapped and then chasing the ball carrier at three quarter speed while making a below average effort to make the tackle. What that resulted in was enough highlight reel plays offensively to make the Sports Center top 10 all season, and that's just in the West Virgina/Baylor game,
Who are the legit title contenders?
Look, WVU put on a show offensively and Geno Smith may have won the Heisman on Saturday but their defense is far form being championship caliber. They wont put up 70 against everybody and its hard to think Smith can duplicate that type of performance. They had better make some adjustments or they may not run the table in the BIG 12, and without a 12-0 record they wont have a shot at getting into the title game.
Then there is the third ranked LSU Tigers who have put together a couple of lack-luster performances and all of the sudden look very beatable. They played very sloppy and very uninspiring football against FCS Townsend. They have to go to Florida on Saturday and then host South Carolina the following weekend. If Les Miles doesn't fix things quick then that all important Alabama game everyone has been talking about wont matter for the Tigers
On the flip side, Alabama didn't play its best football but still looked like the most complete team in the nation.. They can throw the ball with confidence, run it pretty much at will, and their defense is capable of completely dominating a game. Throw in the league's best kicker's and a stable of play making kick returners and you have a well rounded football team. Barring a let down game, the Tide should run the table.
And then there is Oregon. Unlike WVU they can score and play defense. Chip Kelly learned something in losing that national title game to Auburn back in 2010 that could pay off with a championship in 2012. After seeing his prolific offense get slowed down in that contest he started putting extra focus on his defense. Now their not an SEC defense but there good enough.
My Top 5

Replacement Officials. Maybe the NFL Should Replace it Commissioner
The "replacement officials", or at least that's what the NFL has been calling them, has been the topic of conversation since the preseason. But given what we have seen since week one when the games started to matter maybe a better term would have been "incapable officials". They have shown to be about as good at officiating football games as Michael Vick has been throwing touchdowns. But I don't wanna beat the issue of the replacement officials into the ground anymore than it already is. I wanna go a different route. I wanna put the blame with the guy who allowed this to charade to happen in the first place.
Blame it on the Commissioner
It's simple really. Rodger Goodell is solely responsible for the embarrassment that has been brought upon the NFL. It's his job as the head man of the NFL to resolve these types of issues. It's a job that is different from any other top job in the corporate world. He has a ridiculous salary, no governing body to answer too, basically unlimited power, and the ability to actually discipline his only superiors which is the owners. It's a cakewalk. Now yes, he is responsible for a multi billion dollar company. But its a company that would continue to make money with or without Rodger Goodell. And that's my point.
The NFL is richest sports identity in the country and that didn't happen under Goodells watch. The league has been racking in money for years, each season making more and more. Why? Because it's a TV driven league. The TV contracts are worth hundred's of millions of dollars each year alone. Because it's the premier sports brand. Stop ten people on the street and unless one of them is blind,deaf, and dumb all ten will know the NFL brand. You cant say that about any other major sports brand in the world. And its also because they have and always have had a loyal fan base. And its expanding at a rapid rate. You want proof. How many fantasy leagues out there don't have at least one female player? Not many. Yea, you have always had casual female fans but nothing like it is today and its because of the brand. Somewhere out there right now there's a women checking stats, filling out a waiver wire, making trades and talking smack on her leagues message board all because of the what the NFL has built over the years.
Rodger Goodell is hurting that brand. And not just by letting the referee situation get out of hand. The rules of the game have been changed so much that it makes players look like pansies. Don't get me wrong I'm all for player safety to a certain extent but lets not forget: It is football. Its a contact sport. Its meant to be played in a violent fashion. You take that away and you take away the history that makes the sport so great. And its heading in that direction. You throw in the absurd fines he dishes out, the suspensions that are uncalled for and the way he blundered the Saints ordeal and what you have is a pattern of bad and inconsistent decisions.
All I'm saying is that the NFL is the NFL. You could put the CEO of Enron in charge and it would still make money. You don't a commissioner to be an All Pro, he just needs to manage the game.

How bad is it? The Kentucky Edition.
I have gotten some interesting comments from some UK fans in response to yesterdays post about how terrible Kentucky football is right now. Some ask me to elaborate so as with Arkansas, this needed its own post. It's just to much to hit on in a single blog. Some of you ask how bad can it be? The 2012 Wildcat football team may be the worst team the SEC has seen in a decade. And I wouldn't expect any kind of mid season turn around. Kentucky is 1-3 and simply put will struggle to win another game. A week 2 win against Kent St. may be the only thing that will keep this team from going undefeated. In reverse.
Kentucky fans don't care about football.
This is something I've heard from some of you non Kentuckians but surprisingly, your wrong. The majority of UK fans are just like any other collegiate fan base, they want there team to win no matter what sport there competing in. I happen to know quite a few UK fans that are as passionate about there football program as they are their championship basketball program. Sure, as with any major "basketball school" you have a percentage of fans that talk about "Midnight Madness" in August rather than the opening kickoff. But that small percentage doesn't file into Commonwealth Stadium on fall Saturday's to watch a team that up until a couple years ago was heading in the right direction under former coach Rich Brooks.
When things took a turn
In 2009 Brooks led the Wildcats to a 7-5 regular season and a trip to a bowl game. Then hometown product Joker Phillips took over and things have went south in a hurry. 2012 is his third season as head coach. 2012 is his last season as head coach. And yes, I'm sure of it. No I don't have any sources or inside information, I'm just not a complete idiot. It's not hard to see that the players have quit. Not that it matters if they hadn't, there not very good anyway. Its harsh I know, but its just facts. Their offense is putrid, there defense couldn't stop Western Kentucky ( That's not a punchline, it's factual. They gave up 32 points to a team in the Sunbelt Conference) and play makers are non existent. Throw in a terrible coaching staff and it all adds up to be an awful product on the field.
Can they save the season?
Not a chance. There is a possiblity they can squeak out another win against Samford late in the season but I wouldnt count on it . The SEC schedule will have taken its toll and if you think this team has quit now you aint seen nothing yet. They could ask to play the rest of the season in the MAC but Im not sure that would get them bowl eligible.
Where do they go from here?
Kentucky has a golden opportunity here. Bobby Petrino is there for the taking. He definitely wants to coach at a high level and Kentucky plays in the SEC. Petrino already has ties to the bluegrass state having spent time at Louisville so he would have a head start in recruiting. Speaking of recruiting, he could out-recruit the current staff with a cell phone from 1999 and a $500 budget. Not to mention get a lot more out the current roster. Some fans will bring up his moral issues. They hired John Calipari as their basketball coach. Moral integrity and following rules should not be on the coaching application at Kentucky. That's not a shot at the Wildcats either, I applaud it. Look how that has turned out for them.There are other options. Anybody is better than what they have now. But none are as good a fit as Petrino

How bad is it? The Arkansas edition
Since some of you are asking, I'll give you my take on one of the biggest dumpster fires in college football. And fair warning, you ask me for my opinion. While I find some personal enjoyment in the events that are taking place down in Fayetteville I can certainly understand in some ways what Arkansas fans are feeling right now to some degree. I'm a Tennessee fan still hanging on to past glory that now seems so long ago. Even though the Razorbacks don't have the same storied football tradition as the Vols, its a program that was enjoying recent success and was well on its way to seeing that success continue until Bobby Petrino lost control of the motor cycle he was riding and soon after lost his job. There's a little more to this story but I must warn you, I'm a win at all cost kinda guy.
Arkansas's Moral dilemma
After the Petrino crash that ultimately uncovered the affair with a smoking hot 25 year old University of Arkansas employee, it put it's president and AD in the middle of a moral decision. They took the high road and ousted Petrino and decided that wasn't the image they wanted for the program. Fine. Look at the image you portray now. You went from competing for BCS bowls to getting beat by teams that are not even in a automatic qualifying BCS conference. Well done. That's tough to do and you managed to do it in the span of about 7 months. That's impressive by any standards. Throw in your new head coach and his baggage and you successfully set your program back at least 5 years. And don't fool yourself into thinking you will ever be as good as were under Petrino. You wont. And those of you who say it's not all about winning football games, it is, or you wouldn't be so pissed that your team is a disaster right now. Do you think national media would be saying "Arkansas is 4-0 but that Petrino is a sleazy unfaithful s.o.b.') No. I don't think so. Most of you wanted him gone and you got what you wished for. And most of the same ones who wanted him gone cant believe where your program is at right now. Bottom line is once the season started and the Razorbacks played liked the preseason top ten team that they would have been under Petrino most would have forgotten his misuse of power and bad judgement. And if you really had great morals, you wouldn't have hired him in the first place. It's not like Petrino had the image of a guy with high moral values. He lied to Louisville all the way up until the day he left for Atlanta, had numerous run-ins with player's and ownership there, and then left a note in the locker room letting them know he was walking out on them. Not exactly a poster boy for class and integrity. Then for his replacement, you hire a guy who walked out on his program before coaching a game, had to file bankruptcy because of some alleged bad investments and, is an absolute terrible head coach to boot.
Whats Next?
So now you ask, where can we go from here?There's not alot to say really. Nowhere but up I guess.

They took the high road and ousted Petrino and decided that wasn't the image they wanted for the program. Fine. Look at the image you portray now. You went from competing for BCS bowls to getting beat by teams that are not even in a automatic qualifying BCS conference. Well done. That's tough to do and you managed to do it in the span of about 7 months. That's impressive by any standards. Throw in your new head coach and his baggage and you successfully set your program back at least 5 years. And don't fool yourself into thinking you will ever be as good as were under Petrino. You wont. And those of you who say it's not all about winning football games, it is, or you wouldn't be so pissed that your team is a disaster right now. Do you think national media would be saying "Arkansas is 4-0 but that Petrino is a sleazy unfaithful s.o.b.') No. I don't think so. Most of you wanted him gone and you got what you wished for. And most of the same ones who wanted him gone cant believe where your program is at right now. Bottom line is once the season started and the Razorbacks played liked the preseason top ten team that they would have been under Petrino most would have forgotten his misuse of power and bad judgement. And if you really had great morals, you wouldn't have hired him in the first place. It's not like Petrino had the image of a guy with high moral values. He lied to Louisville all the way up until the day he left for Atlanta, had numerous run-ins with player's and ownership there, and then left a note in the locker room letting them know he was walking out on them. Not exactly a poster boy for class and integrity. Then for his replacement, you hire a guy who walked out on his program before coaching a game, had to file bankruptcy because of some alleged bad investments and, is an absolute terrible head coach to boot.
Whats Next?
So now you ask, where can we go from here?There's not alot to say really. Nowhere but up I guess.

CFB: The Day After
A little less than twenty four hours have passed since week four came to a close and it left us with plenty to talk about. Some teams that were supposed to look good did, while others not so much. A few schools had program defining wins while others had inexcusable losses to lower tier conferences. Just another week in in the wonderful world of college football.
Biggest Winners
While #1 Alabama was cruising against out gunned FAU, other top teams had to put in work to remain in the BCS national title picture. Now second ranked Oregon throttled then #22 Arizona in what started off as a sloppy defensive type game until Chip Kelly turned the Ducks loose in the second half. #4 Florida St. answered any critics who were questioning whether or not the Noles were back with an impressive performance against then #10 Clemson. We also had #15 Kansas St. going into Norman and upsetting the sixth ranked Sooners to officially put Dan Schneider's Wildcats into the BCS conversation. #5 Georgia and #6 South Carolina both rolled against SEC competition while #10 Notre Dame forced Denard Robinson into five turnovers to get passed then eighteenth ranked Michigan. All these winners got a boost in the latest polls and put themselves into serious title contention.

Some teams didn't bring there A game yesterday and while it only cost some a slight drop in the polls it caused others there shot a national championship. #3 LSU looked beatable for the first time against a below average Auburn team and #8 West Virgina struggled against un-ranked Maryland. But both managed to get a win and only a one spot fall in the polls for the Tigers was the only side effect for now. Oklahoma started yesterday at #6 and looking to remain unbeaten but couldn't hold off Collin Klein as they are all but out of the BCS title picture with the loss to Kansas State. Clemson was a top ten team twenty four hours ago but had there hopes of a trip to Miami crushed with that thrilling game in Tallahassee. The teams that escaped with victories showed some weaknesses that future opponents will try to exploit while the ones who lost will have to refocus and hope for some help. But its never as bad as it seems for the teams with a loss right now. You could be Arkansas or Kentucky.
My Top 5
1. Alabama
Still the best team in the nation. Period.

Slow start but when they turned it on, they really turn it on. Some challenges ahead but barring a slip-up should make for a helluva title game against the Tide in Miami.
3. FSU
A big win against a good Clemson team and looked damn impressive. Made some big stops on defense when it mattered and offensively looked sharp. The easiest schedule of any of the other top 5 by far, the Noles should be 11-0 heading into they season finale against Florida.
4. LSU
Just didn't play well. Plain and simple. The Tigers also showed some weaknesses in the passing game that better opponents will be able to exploit.
5. Georgia
Absolutely hammered a Vanderbilt team that some people thought would keep it close. Those people should have know better. It's the same old Vandy. And the Dogs are very talented. They have a tough stretch of SEC games coming up starting Saturday with Tennessee.
Stock Up
EJ Manuel QB-Florida St. Manuel threw for 380 yards and rushed for another 102 in Florida States 49-37 win over Clemson putting him in the Heisman conversation.
Cobi Hamilton WR- Arkansas. The only, and I cant stress the word only enough here, positive to the dumpster fire that is the Arkansas Razorbacks was Hamilton's SEC record 10 catches for 303 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to Rutgers. The other positive for Hamilton is he's a senior so he will be out of Fayetteville soon, which may be the better of the two.
And if you took my week 4 picks and bet the farm like I said, your made a substantial financial gain this weekend as I was a perfect 3-0. This is a humble brag, and may not happen again for the rest of the season

NFL Week 3 Look Around
Players to Watch
It's early in the NFL season and by no means can you identify legit playoff teams in week three but you can start to see if certain teams will start putting it together and others continue to be in self destruct mode. Week three can also give you an idea about what direction some of the leagues premier impact players are heading in. Can Peyton bounce back from that three interception performance last week against a very good Houston defense? Will Micheal Vick continue to toss the ball to opposing teams DB's like he's conducting a high school secondary drill? I heard the Ravens defense yell "Pass! Ball! Oskie! every time Vick dropped back last week. (The Eagles however are 2-0 despite a league high 9 turnovers). Will Tony Romo ever play like the QB that he is hyped up to be? Will Chicago's offensive line even attempt to block for Jay Cutler this week? I personally love seeing Cutler get knocked around like Sean Austin in "Rudy" and act like its someone else's fault that he threw the ball to Green Bay all night. Nothing personal to Bears fans, for me it's a dislike of Cutler. And Vanderbilt. And can Chris Johnson, aka CJ, aka CJ2K, aka Lighting, aka.... he has more nicknames than rushing yards heading into week three get on track. He set the bar high before the season when he said he wanted to rush for 2000 yards again. Titans fans would settle for a 100 yard game. And that is just a few players who are searching for some success.
Marquee Match-Ups
Not a big week for big games but here a few that should make your football Sunday enjoyable.
Chicago - St. Louis
Maybe not a big time game but watching Cutler get jacked up repeatedly should make any fan feel good. Unless your a Bears or Vandy fan. Cutler is the only thing Vandy fans have to be proud of. Which should tell you about Vandy fans,
Cincinnati - Washington
RGIII is fun to watch. The Redskins may be a team to watch in the NFC and the Bengals have Andy Dalton and AJ Green who are good for at least one or two phenomenal plays a game.
Houston - Denver
Peyton can prove that he is really "back" with a win against one of the best, if not the best team in the AFC. The Texans have an outstanding defense and an offense that has several fantasy league stars.
New England - Baltimore
The Patriots are coming off a bad loss a week ago and history tells us they will bounce back with a vengeance. But the Ravens are also coming off a tough loss and history also suggest the Dirty Birds will show up with there A game. I think this is the best game of the week and should be fun to watch.

The officials. The league actually fined two coaches this past week for telling the refs in a stern voice and using "inappropriate language" that the were terrible, when in fact they are terrible. This is a big boy league and Rodger Goodell is making players and coaches look like pansies

College Football Week 4 Preview
Games to watch
Week four brings us a match up of two high powered offenses going head to head as #22 Arizona goes into Eugene to face #3 Oregon in what should be a detailed clinic in the "spread" offense. This game has the potential to be the most entertaining game of the weekend if you consider the fact that these to teams combine for an average of 1,200 yards per game and over 100 points. Really, those are actually numbers. Not play station stats. Look them up. Throw in Oregon's uniform combinations and this one should be fun to watch. Take the over on the points, even though it will probably be like 70 it's a safe bet. A couple hours before this highlight reel #4 Florida St. hopes to keep its national title hopes alive when #10 Clemson goes to Tallahassee. This is considered the marquee game because some have the Seminoles pegged for a spot in the BCS title game. I am not one of them but none the less it has the making of being a very good football game. Around the same time you have #6 Oklahoma taking on #15 Kansas St. in Norman. Last season the Sooner's won by 41 points. It may a little closer tomorrow, but not by much. Then there is #11 Notre Dame trying to kept all the early season optimism rolling against #18 Michigan. This should be a back and fourth game that will make any college football fan appreciate the rivalry. You have a few others that could be watch worthy depending on which teams decide to show up. #7 South Carolina and new SEC East opponent Missouri, #13 USC taking out frustrations on rival Cal, and #2 LSU putting Gene Chizick one step closer to the unemployment line at Auburn.

The only difference is you saying it's not.
You have #14 Florida matched up with a Kentucky team that couldn't get to 6 wins if they played in the MAC the rest of the season. Even Billy Gillespie laughs at UK. Add any Big East game to this list.

September: Is this the best time of year for a sports fan?
I happen to think it may be. Just hear me out.
As I sit here on this Thursday night getting prepared to do some channel flipping between some games that include some of the biggest names in there respective sports, I began to think that late September could be the best time of year for a sports enthusiast. I mean sure, there is nothing like that first college football game of the season when eight months of anticipation finally gives way to the opening kickoff, but lets review for a minute. Football season is just getting cranked up. The race for playoff spots is in full swing for over a dozen MLB teams. A new PGA FedEx cup champion will be crowned by the end of the weekend. We're roughly three weeks from the start of the NBA preseason, and there's the NHL lockout to discuss. Throw in a couple months of high profile UFC fights and I'm hard pressed to find a better time to be a sports fan.
Tonight alone you can watch the defending Super Bowl champions led by the other Manning (who has two, not one but two Super Bowl rings) take on one of the most electrifying QB's in the NFL in Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. By the end of the first quarter you can flip over and watch Boise State try and win it's 19th consecutive September home game against a pass happy BYU team on the famed blue turf.
As I write this blog the Milwaukee Brewers have a 1 run lead in the top of the 9th. If they can close the deal they are one game closer to a wild card spot.Speaking of closing the deal, the Cincinnati Reds became the first team to clinch a playoff birth today. Hit "up" four times on your tv remote and you can see the 2011 MLB MVP runner-up Matt Kemp try and end his September slump and pull his Dodgers one game closer in the NL west standings. And that's just a couple of examples of what is shaping up to be one of the best Septembers for Major League Baseball in quite some time.
Then there's Tiger Woods, who continued his streak of great opening round golf by shooting 66 at Eastlake Golf Club today to place himself atop the leader board in the PGA's final tournament of the year. If the old Tiger shows up over the next three days then he will win the FedEx Cup again and the "Tiger is back" talk can carry over into the 2013 golf season.
We can almost officially start the "Not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six," not gonna happen, talk of the Miami Heat title run and the pure hatred of LeBron James. Is Dwight Howard actually gonna give effort to his new club? Can the Boston Celtics win one more for KG and Pierce? How many guns will be found in NBA locker rooms? My over/under on that by the way is at least 10, and that's only the ones that will get reported. If it were actually numbers I would raise that number to around 1000, but times that by 3 if you count the D league.
And we can kind of sort talk a little hockey, most likely KHL hockey as it seems that's were many of the NHL's top talent will be at least starting their seasons with a lockout in place. I'm not to worried about this however because, frankly, no ones losing money yet. Players haven't started missing game checks, owners haven't had empty arenas, and the NHL brass hasn't started receiving all the bad publicity that it cannot afford to get with an extended work stoppage. I have full confidence that this will not last long.
And all this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is happening and will continue to happen in the sports world over the next few months. I didn't even mention the chase for the Piston Cup with Lighting McQueen leading the standings after......(somewhere I'm sure there is someone who actually cares, and knows what the hell is going on in that "sport" known as Nascar.) I am not one of them by the way.
My point is, I am convinced this is the best time of year for a sports fan.

College Football Week 3
5 things we've learned so far.
1. The SEC is still atop the polls.
After two weeks of the college football season the SEC is still flexing its muscle. Four out of the top ten teams in the latest rankings reside in the South Eastern Conference. #1 Alabama looks poised to play in the BCS title game barring a slip-up November 3rd against #2 LSU. The Tigers could book their ticket to Miami if they can knockoff the Crimson Tide in a game that should decide the SEC West, and most likely the conference. Georgia sits at #5 and the favorite to represent the East in Atlanta for the annual SEC championship game. #7 South Carolina will be a factory for that spot but their road is a lot tougher with LSU and #14 Florida in back to back weeks, and both on the road. The Gators may be the team that disrupts things as they look better than expected coming off a big win against Tennessee.
2. The Pac-12 hopes for a BCS title rest with Oregon.
Another year, another loss to Stanford for USC. The Trojans had there sights set on a national championship run and QB Matt Barkley was leading the Heisman race but Saturday changed all that. Barkley had costly turnovers and now USC is on the outside looking in with a showdown with Oregon looming. Not to mention games against #19 UCLA and #22 Arizona that now seem much more dicey. Oregon on the other hand has put on an offensive clinic in the first 3 games and looks like a legit title contender. There young at some skill positions and should only get better with each games, and uniform.
3. Notre Dame is back in the National spotlight for actually winning football games.
The Irish are usually one of the most talked about teams in the preseason and its usually for no reason other than several notable alums (or coaches) that work for certain sports networks. Throw in their ridicules tv contract and even if your not trying to keep tabs on Notre Dame football you'll be in the loop. Three games into the season the Fighting Irish have shown that for the first time in a long time, there's reason to give attention to what their accomplishing on the field. Coming off of a huge win over #21 Michigan State the Irish moved up to #11 in the polls. Head Coach Brian Kelly has his offense playing much more balanced than a year ago and the defense may be one of the most underrated in the country.
4. Louisville may go 12-0.
It's early, I know but the #20th ranked Cardinals are 3-0, Teddy Bridgewater is among the best young QB's in the country, and their schedule is slightly tougher than local prep power house Louisville Trinity HS. Charlie Strong has brought an SEC toughness to his defense and he has some big time play makers on offense. Add all that together and its a team that could find itself playing in a BCS bowl at season's end.
5. Some Athletic Directors are already starting a coaching search.
Maybe not publicly but trust me, there are several AD's out there beginning the process of finding a new leader for there football programs and most are in the SEC. John L Smith has taken an Arkansas team that started the season ranked in the top ten to one of the worst teams in the SEC. And he has done it in dramatic fashion, having lost to Louisiana Monroe in overtime and then suffering a 52-0 blowout against Alabama the following week. To top it all off he ask the media in his weekly press conference what was with all the gloomy faces and that they should "smile". There will be plenty or smiling at season's end, if he makes it that long. Joker Phillip's Kentucky team just became the third best team in the bluegrass state after losing to Western Kentucky on Saturday, and that's debatable with the above mentioned Louisville Trinity HS also residing in the same state. The Wildcats look like a team that has giving up on the coaches, them selves and the program. With 9 games left to play things could get ugly in Lexington. And then there is Derek Dooley at Tennessee. In his third year as head man for the Vols, Dooley has yet to beat a ranked opponent and suffered another loss to high profile rival Florida Saturday on a national stage. The Vols have a stretch of five games coming up against nationally ranked opponents and unless Doolander can turn things around in a hurry Tennessee may be looking for it's fourth head coach in the last five years.
Stock up: Stephon Taylor RB, Stanford
Taylor had 213 offensive yards and two touchdowns Saturday as the Cardinals knocked off #2 USC. A year after losing Andrew Luck, Taylor may be the next big thing in Palo Alto.
Stock Down: Le'veon Bell RB, Michigan State
After starting the season hot with a 210 yard rushing performance in week one and averaging over 4 yards per carry, Bell ran for just 77 yards on 19 carries in Saturday's loss to Notre Dame. Every team on Michigan State's schedule will try and duplicate the Irish's defensive game plan which could make for tough going for the Bell and the Spartans moving forward

After two weeks of the college football season the SEC is still flexing its muscle. Four out of the top ten teams in the latest rankings reside in the South Eastern Conference. #1 Alabama looks poised to play in the BCS title game barring a slip-up November 3rd against #2 LSU. The Tigers could book their ticket to Miami if they can knockoff the Crimson Tide in a game that should decide the SEC West, and most likely the conference. Georgia sits at #5 and the favorite to represent the East in Atlanta for the annual SEC championship game. #7 South Carolina will be a factory for that spot but their road is a lot tougher with LSU and #14 Florida in back to back weeks, and both on the road. The Gators may be the team that disrupts things as they look better than expected coming off a big win against Tennessee.
